Around St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great and was the capital of Russia from 1712 to 1918. The city, also known as Petrograd and Leningrad, was returned back to the name of St. Petersburg in 1991.
During most of the 18th century, Russia was ruled by women with a taste for the architecture and court life of other European capitals of the at time. To support those tastes, several palaces were built in the St. Petersburg area, including the Hermitage, Peterhof Palace, and the Imperial Palace at Tsarskoe Selo.
